Assalamualaikum Arabic script
Even though we have heard or even said this greeting so many times, but it's not uncommon for those of us who don't know how the Arabic writing of Assamualaikum is correct.
Imam an – Nawawi in the book of Al-Adzkar, where he wrote that there 3 the type of greeting that can be used as a prayer or greeting to fellow Muslims. The sentence is as follows: :
Arabic writing : السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ
Latin : Assalamu’alaikum
That means : May safety be bestowed upon you
Arabic writing : السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ
Latin : Assalamu'alaikum wa rahmatullahi
That means : May God's blessings and peace be upon you
For greetings like the one above, this is actually still incomplete, even so it does not reduce the good meaning contained in the sentence. But it would be nice if we knew a more complete sentence, here is the full phrase :
السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ
❝Assalamu'alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh❞
Good luck (safety) passed on to you all, also God's mercy and blessings.
Sentence or in greeting, does use the plural. Even though the greeting we give is only to one person.
Arabic text Walaikumsalam
After we know the types of greetings as above, then we will discuss how to answer them. Even though it is sunnah to say salam, it is obligatory to answer it. So we also have to know how to answer greetings correctly. Here are the types / how to answer greetings :
In answering greetings, better be more complete than the greeting, as found in the Qur'an:
وَإِذَا حُيِّيتُم بِتَحِيَّةٍ فَحَيُّوا۟ بِأَحْسَنَ مِنْهَآ أَوْ رُدُّوهَآ ۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَىْءٍ حَسِيبًا
"When you are honored with an honor, then return the honor with something better than it, or return the honor (with a similar one). Verily Allah takes into account everything.” (QS.An-Nisa’: 86)
Reply Regards :
- Wa'alaikumussalam(وَعَلَيْكُمْ السَّلاَمُ)
- Wa'alaikumussalam wa rahmatullahi (وَعَلَيْكُمْ السَّلاَمُ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ)
- Wa'alaikumussalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh (وَعَلَيْكُمْ السَّلاَمُ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ)
That means : And good luck, grace, and His blessings (that) passed on to you all (also).
To answer the greeting, which this has been exemplified by Rasulullah Shollallahu 'Alaihi Wassalam. It has been mentioned by Ibn Abi Hathim and Ibn Jarir.
One day when the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, was sitting with his companions, soon someone came by saying, "Assalamualaikum". So Rasulullah SAW only answered him by saying "Waalaikum salaam wa rahmah".
Then the second person came, then bye : "Assalaamualaikum wa rahmatullah". Then Rasulullah Shollallahu 'Alaihi Wassalam answered him with a longer one, that is : "Waalaikum salaam wa rahmatullah wabarakatuh".
