Understanding Hajj and Umrah
Hajj is one of the pillars of Islam, namely the 5th pillar of Islam which the law of worship is obligatory for people who have the ability to do it both physically and financially..
other than that, Hajj literally means going on purpose / visit. The meaning is to intentionally come to Baitullah physically and mentally with the purpose of performing certain practices, with certain conditions, and also at certain times, that is in the month of Hajj.
While, Umrah is an act of worship that is almost the same as Hajj, However, this Umrah law is not mandatory, which means that the law of going for Umrah is a sunnah to do. Umrah can be done every day, except on the day of the pilgrimage.
other than that, Umrah literally means pilgrimage. The meaning, pilgrimage to the Baitullah with the aim of carrying out certain practices, namely tawaf, sai, and shave.
Difference between Hajj and Umrah
Actually, we've already mentioned the difference a little bit above, but for more details we will explain in detail below.
1. Legal Difference
The main difference between Hajj and Umrah lies in the law. Hajj is one of the pillars of Islam, which becomes a pillar to 5 and must be done for Muslims.
With conditions, physically and financially able to do it. As the word of Allah SWT is written in Al-Qur'an Nul Karim :
وَلِلَّهِ
عَلَى النَّاسِ حِجُّ الْبَيْتِ مَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ إِلَيْهِ سَبِيلًا وَمَنْ
كَفَرَ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ غَنِيٌّ عَنِ الْعَالَمِي
That means:
"He has real signs, (among them) Ibrahim's tomb; Whoever enters it will be safe; Hajj is a human obligation towards God, i.e. people who are able to travel to the Baitullah. Whoever disbelieves then verily Allah Almighty does not need anything from the universe.” [QS. Ali Imron: 97]
While Umrah is not obligatory, but the law is sunnah muakad (preferred sunnah). That means even though we are able to carry out Umrah, still does not change the legal provisions.
But when we can, how good it is that we perform this Umrah, as the following Hadith;
Hadith Jabir bin 'Abdillah Radhiyallahu Anhu, he said which means that :
Rasulullah Sallallahu 'alaihi wasallam was asked about whether it is obligatory or sunnah for Muslims to perform Umrah. The Prophet Shallallahu 'alaihi wasallam then answered, “Not. If you go for umrah then that's even better.” [HR. Tirmidzi]
2. Implementation Time Difference
When it's implemented, Hajj can only be performed in the month of Hajj, namely on the 9 – 13 Zulhijjah. Apart from the specified time, Hajj cannot be performed, which means worship (haji) this can only be done once a year.
While, Umrah can be done at any time, but there are certain times / the date that was makruh, that is Arofah (9 Dzulhijah), hari nahar (date 10 Dzulhijjah), and tasyrik day (date 11, 12, 13 Dzulhijjah).
Basically, Umrah cannot be performed or performed at the time of the Hajj.
3. Differences in Place of Implementation
Apart from the execution time, The difference between Hajj and Umrah is the place where it is performed.
Hajj and Umrah are indeed performed in Makkah, but on the Hajj one must fulfill the pillars that are located outside Makkah. The pillars are to do wukuf in Arafah, bad / stay at Muzdalifah, and throw jumroh, of Mina.
4. Crowd Level Difference
In the pilgrimage, All Muslims who come from all over the world do it simultaneously.
So don't be surprised, Mecca will be filled with pilgrims at that time and of course it will cause an extraordinary crowd or you can say like a sea of humans.
Different from Umrah, Umrah can be done at any time except on the day described above. Because of that, the level of the crowd is not like or as dense as at the time of the pilgrimage.
So usually Umrah pilgrims are not overcrowded when carrying out each of the pillars (Umrah worship).
5. Comparable Difference
The last difference between Hajj and Umrah is from the procedure of its implementation or in implementing its pillars. For Umrah pilgrims, will fulfill the pillar like Tawaf, Ihram, Sya'i, and Tahalul.
While for pilgrims, all the pillars are done but added 3 Pillars of Hajj, namely Wukuf at Arafah, bad / stay at Muzdalifah, and throw a jumroh at Mina.
