Definition and Purpose of Classification

Classification is a systematic method of studying a particular object.

The purpose of this classification is to describe the characteristics of living things, distinguish between types to make it easier to recognize, know about the kinship between living things and also to study the evolution of living things based on their kinship.

To make it easier to group organisms, Then a classification rule is drawn up / grouping (taxonomic level), starting from the highest, namely the kingdom to the lowest level, i.e. species.

Order of taxon levels in grouping / Animal classification consists of kingdoms, phylum, class, ordo, family, genus, and the lowest is species.

Animal Classification

The following is a grouping / classification of animals based on their respective characteristics or criteria, that is, based on / no spine, the food, body symmetry, habitat, body cover, locomotion, to how to breed the animal itself.

The following is an explanation of the classification of animals based on what has been mentioned above along with examples of animals ;

Based on There / No Spine

Based on there / no spine, Animals are divided into several types, namely:, vertebrata / vertebrate (have a spine) and invertebrates / invertebrae (no spine).

  • Examples of vertebrates :
    • Ball,
    • Shark,
    • Stingray,
    • Catfish,
    • Komodo, dll.
  • Examples of animals with no backbones :
    • Shrimp,
    • Leeches,
    • Flatworms,
    • Snail,
    • Starfish, dll.

By Food

Based on their diet, animalia is divided into: 3 (three) group namely herbivores, carnivore, and omnivore.

  • Examples of herbivores (plant-eating animals) :
    • Goat
    • Buffalo
    • Cow
    • Elephant
    • Russia, dll.
  • Examples of Carnivores (meat-eating animal) :
    • Tiger,
    • Komodo,
    • Crocodile,
    • Lion,
    • Wolf, dll.
  • Examples of omnivorous animals (animal that eats everything) :
    • Ape,
    • Chimpanzee,
    • Orangutan,
    • Pig,
    • Weasel, dll.

Based on Body Symmetry

Based on the symmetry of the body is divided into 2 the first group is bilateral symmetry (stacked up 2 (two) adjacent side) and the second is radial symmetry (circular body shape / round).

Examples of radially symmetrical living things include:

  • From the phylum Coelenterata / cnidaria :
    • Hydra
    • Obelia
    • Jellyfish
  • From the phylum echinoderm :
    • Starfish
    • Sea snake star
    • Pig hair
    • sea lilies
    • sea cucumber

Examples of bilaterally symmetrical living things include:

  • From the phylum platyhelmintes :
    • Planaria
    • Fasciola hepatica
    • Chlonorsis sinensis
    • Tape soles
    • Taenia saginata

By Habitat

Based on where you live / animal habitats are grouped into 3 group: animals that live on land, live in the water, and animals that live on land and water (amphibian).

  • Examples of animals that live on land :
    • Kuda
    • Cow
    • Cat
    • Ant
    • Giraffe, dll.
  • Examples of animals that live in water :
    • Lumba-lumba
    • Paus
    • Octopus
    • Squid
    • Starfish, dll.
  • Examples of animals that live in water and on land (amphibian) :
    • Frog
    • Crocodile
    • Lizard
    • Cecilia
    • Salamander, dll.

Based on Her Body Cover

Based on body cover, animals are divided into 4 group of scaly animals, slimy animal, hairy animal, and furry animals.

  • Examples of scaly animals :
    • They are fish
    • Tilapia fish
    • garden lizard
    • Ular cobra
    • Estuarine crocodile
  • Examples of Slimy Animals :
    • Snail.
    • Hagfish.
    • Eel.
  • Examples of hairy animals :
    • Chicken
    • Baby
    • Bird
    • Duck
    • Swan, dll.
  • Examples of furry animals :
    • Dog
    • Cat
    • Bear
    • Ape
    • Ball, dll.

Based on the Movement Tool

Based on the means of locomotion, animals are divided into: 4 group, namely feet, wing, stomach, and stomach and legs.

  • Examples of animals with leg movements :
    • Tiger
    • Dog
    • Cat
    • Frog
    • Rabbit, dll.
  • Examples of animals with abdominal locomotion :
    • Worm
    • Ular
    • Snail
    • Leeches
    • Eel, dll.
  • Examples of animals with leg and stomach locomotion :
    • Gecko
    • Lizard
    • Lizard
    • House lizard
    • Slira, dll.

Based on how they reproduce

Based on how they reproduce, animals are classified into: 3 group, namely oviparous (lay eggs), viviparous (give birth), and ovoviviparous (lay eggs and some give birth)

  • Examples of oviparous animals :
    • Chicken
    • Bird
    • Gecko
    • House lizard
    • Crocodile, dll.
  • Examples of viviparous animals :
    • Ape
    • Elephant
    • Cow
    • Goat
    • Tiger, dll.
  • Examples of ovoviviparous animals :
    • Shark
    • Stingray
    • Lizard
    • Iguana
    • Seahorses
