Electromagnetic wave
An electromagnetic wave is a wave in which it propagates without the need for a medium to propagate and is included in the transverse wave. Electromagnetic energy can propagate through various characters including the following :
- Amplitude (A)
- Speed(V)
- Wavelength (lamda).
Electromagnetic energy is emitted through different levels. As the level gets higher, then the wavelength that is produced is lower than the energy produced, the frequency produced is higher.

Theory of Electromagnetic Waves
In the year 1837 a scientist named James Clerk Maxwell explains the basic theory of the propagation of electromagnetic waves.
In the paper, Maxwell put forward a theory about the dynamics of the electromagnetic field, which theory he obtained based on the results of his research in the year 1861 & 1865.
The following is the core of Maxwell's theory of electromagnetic waves:
- a. Changes in the electric field are capable of producing magnetic fields
- b. Light is included in electromagnetic waves.
The above theory is supported by several scientists, as follows:
- Heinrich Rudolph Hertz who is a scientist from Germany proves that electromagnetic waves are one of the transverse waves. The proof is also in accordance with the facts that light can show symptoms of polarization.
- Dutch scientist, Peter Zeeman states that strong magnetic fields can affect light beams.
- Through his experiments Stark,which is a scientist from Germany expressed his opinion that the light beam can be influenced by the electric field.
Some of the results of previous experiments have shown the following electrical symptoms:
- Faraday's Law: The electric field is caused by changes in the magnetic field
- Hukum Biot-Savart: An electric current can produce a magnetic field around it.
- Coloumb's Law: Electric charge produces a strong electric field.
Properties of Electromagnetic Waves
- There are several electromagnetic waves, based on frequency(f) or wavelength(lamda).
- This wave also does not need media to propagate.
- Electromagnetic waves have no mass, but it has energy.
- Included in transverse waves, and contains the same properties as other transverse waves.
- electric field (E) will always be perpendicular to the magnetic field (B) in one phase.
- The energy produced is proportional to the frequency of the wave.
- Electromagnetic waves have momentum.
Wave Spectrum
Below is a spectrum of electromagnetic waves ordered by wavelength(lamda) largest or frequency(f) the smallest, until the wavelength(lamda) smallest or frequency (f) the biggest. And its benefits in daily life.
1. Radio Wave
Radio waves are waves that can be used to deliver signals over great distances. The example is used on the radio, handphone, and other communication tools.
2. Micro wave
Microwave has a wavelength (lamda) which has a order of several cm and also frequency (f) both of which approach the natural resonant frequencies of the water molecules in solids and in liquids.
One example is ,application of microwaves to microwaves.
3. Infrared ray
Infrared rays are rays that cannot be seen but can be detected beyond the red light spectrum which can be used to transfer a small / medium form of energy.
An example is a television remote that is used to move data into the form of energy.
4. Visible Light
Visible light has an electromagentic spectrum that can be detected with the human eye. one application is the use of lasers in the optical fiber in the eye field of health.
5. Sinar Ultraviolet
The sun is the main source of ultraviolet light.
6. X-ray
X-rays are rays that are often used in medicine,one of its uses is to dreamy of internal human organs.
7. Gamma rays
Gamma rays have the smallest wavelength and have the highest frequency and have the greatest penetrating power.
Gamma rays can be used in the medical field which is useful for cleaning some of the tools in the world of health.
