Meaning of Muhasabah
Before discussing the meaning of muhasabah, we must first know the origin of the word muhasabah in Arabic rules. The word muhasabah comes from the following basic words: :
- حَسِب [Hasiba]
- يَحْسَبُ [Yahsabu]
- حِسَابًا [Account]
The meaning of meditation ( مُحَاسَبَةَ ) Literally, it means doing calculations, while the meaning in syar'i terms is doing evaluations / self-evaluation of the good and the bad that we do in everything, both related to worship to Allah SWT and social relations, namely those related to His creatures.
The meaning of the creature is not only human, more than plants, animal, air, air, and everything that God created, because in essence what is visible / invisible to all of us is the creation of Allah the Almighty.

Hadith About Reasoning
It is written in Al-Qur'an Nul Karim about the command to reflect and the meaning of the essence of reflection, as the following words of Allah SWT.
Translate : “ O you who believe!, fear Allah and let each person pay attention to what he has done for tomorrow; fear God, verily God is great- Knowing what you do ” [QS.Al-Hasyr (59):18].
Translate : “ Not a servant (Becomes) pious until he does muhasabah on himself harder than a stingy coworker who makes calculations with his friends ".
Hadith About Reasoning :
From Syadad bin Aus r.a, from Prophet Muhammad SAW, that he said ;
Translate : “ Smart people (success) is a self-centered person, and charity for life after death. While the weak, is a person who follows his lust and dreams of Allah SWT ”.[HR. Tirmidzi]
Benefits and Importance of Reflection
In fact, there are many benefits that a person will get by doing self-reflection and there are also many advantages that will be obtained by people who always reflect., Among them are :
1. Know Your Own Weaknesses
By thinking, then every Muslim will know his weaknesses and be aware of the bad disgrace he has, well that is a practice of worship, as well as other things in worldly life.
So that, thus he will know what he must do to become a better self.
2. Knowing Rights and Responsibilities
In the spiritual sense, Someone who always reflects will be aware of the rights and obligations as a servant.
And a servant will understand the essence of true worship, that everything he does, All deeds and pious deeds are solely for the sake of Allah SWT.
3. Knowing Truth and Falsehood
One will better understand everything, both good and bad, something truth or falsehood, whether it is big or small and whatever of the two.
By doing self-reflection, A person will realize that everything he does will be held accountable by Allah SWT in the hereafter. This is the wisdom of a person who always does self-reflection.
4. Fear of Sin
A person who always reflects will be afraid of doing something worth immorality and badness (Dosa), He is aware that every action is always supervised by Allah SWT.
And he realizes that peace is doing something that is of good value / righteous deeds to bring himself closer to Allah SWT.
So that a servant who always does muhasabah will really hate bad lust and always be aware of it.
Imam Ibn al-Qayyim said that people who do not do self-reflection and make things easy, will depend a lot on God's forgiveness.
